Mata means "mother" in Hindi, and the mission of Mata Traders is to work with organizations that educate, employ, and empower women in India.
Mata Traders was founded by Maureen Dunn, who first set foot in India on a round-the-world trip with her two college best friends. Maureen was soon going back to India on annual buying trips where she became increasingly aware of the poverty living conditions and the way that her buying power could really make a difference. She committed to working with producer groups that paid fair wages.
Soon Maureen's former travel companions Michelle and Joni joined the company as partners, and they grew to really appreciate that even the most traditional women, when given the opportunity, thrive in a sphere of meaningful work that is outside their homes and families.
The Mata Trader's collection is made using sustainably farmed cotton, with traditional block printing, dying, and hand embroidery techniques applied. The result is a cool, vintage inspired, boho-chic collection that looks great in your wardrobe and helps poor women in India thrive.
