Mata means "mother" in Hindi, and the mission of Mata Traders is to work with organizations that educate, employ, and empower women in India.
Mata Traders was founded by Maureen Dunn, who first set foot in India on a round-the-world trip with her two college best friends. Maureen was soon going back to India on annual buying trips where she would bring home all sorts of artisans goods, from wall hangings to leather shoes. She became increasingly aware of the poverty living conditions and the way that her buying power could really make a difference, so she committed to working with producer groups that paid fair wages.
Soon Maureen's former travel companions Michelle and Joni joined the company as partners, and they grew to really appreciate that even the most traditional women, when given the opportunity, thrive in a sphere of meaningful work that is outside their homes and families.
The Mata Trader's collection is made using sustinably farmen cotton, with traditional block printing, dying, and hand embroidery tequniques applied. The result is a cool, vintage insprired, boho-chic collection that looks great in your wardrobe and helps poor women in India thrive.
